Sand paintings

Scope note

Highly conventionalized ceremonial designs in a limited number of colors, composed of sand and other natural materials such as minerals or pollen. They are created or used in relgious rituals by various groups, including Navajo, Pueblo, and Zuni in North America, Australian Aborigines, and Tibetans, Japanese, and Hindus.
