Hallmarks

Scope note

Official stamps affixed by guilds or assay offices upon articles made of gold or silver as evidence of the quality of the metal. Distinguished from "makers' marks" which are stamped on articles of gold or silver for the purpose of identifying the craftsman or workshop of origin.
