Use for folded books developed in China and Japan, in which individual folded sheets are gathered into a text block with the folds at the back. Adhesive is applied between the sheets along the outside of the folds to attach adjacent sheets to each other; the cover is adhered to the first and last leaves but not to the spine. When the book is opened, each pair of adhered pages stands out at an angle like the wings of a butterfly, with two pages of text alternating with two blank pages.
