Writing boards (tablets)

Scope note

Hand-held tablets upon which one writes or draws, either directly, or as a flat, rigid support for another surface such as paper. Those written upon directly are typically coated with a substance such as clay, plaster, or wax upon which the characters or depictions are incised with a stylus.
