One of a collection of 456 Roman coins formed for study purposes by Professor Giles F. Carter, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Eastern Michigan University. Some of the coins were acquired primarily to undertake metallurgical analysis on them, and are donated to us with the intention that they should continue to be used as such. These are a very welcome resource for the Museum, but they would not be accessioned as part of our curatorial collection. Other coins were acquired for the study of types and varieties, and at least 200 of these would be accessioned. The final selection would be made after acceptance by the Syndicate.

One of 42 silver coins from two or more Scandinavian hoards of the 10th and 11th centuries. These came from the collection of James Curle (d.1944) of Melrose, Roxburghshire, and were part of lot 158 at Glendinings, 19 July 2000. The dirhems (nos. 2-41), which are heavily cut and tested, are likely to come from a 10th-century hoard, while the European coins, of which there were rather more in the lot, clearly came from a different hoard, deposited in the mid-11th century.

One of a collection of 486 coins, tokens, banknotes and medals, comprising mainly 18th-20th century British and foreign coins, but including some Roman, medieval and other pieces. The collection was formed by Peter Allen (1905-93) and given to Mrs Allen Manheim, who is generously offering it to the Museum with the proviso that any coins not required for the collection may be sold and the proceeds used to purchase other items for the Department of Coins and Medals. Sixty-five items have been selected for the collection: 58 coins, including an antoninianus of Carausius (AD 286-93); a silver penny of William I, Paxs type; a penny of Edward II, class 11b3/11b2, Durham; a groat of Edward IVs second reign, London; a shilling of Charles I; and a crown of Charles II; a gold sovereign and half-sovereign of Victoria; one token of the British Armed Forces; three banknotes, Belgium (1) and Germany (2); and three medals, including two German military awards (a 1914 Iron Cross 2nd class and 1939 War Merit Cross 2nd class) which were picked up by a friend of Mr Allen among debris in Hitlers bunker after the Allied capture of Berlin in 1945.
