Use for members of the privileged citizen class of ancient Rome, and, under the Roman and Byzantine Empires, for holders of high rank and title of this name conferred by the emperor. Also used for members of the influential and hereditary ruling class in certain Medieval German, Swiss, and Italian free cities.
