Palatines

Scope note

Term used in various parts of Europe at different times from the Roman Empire to the early modern era, and in some European colonies in America, to designate high-ranking officials or nobles who either directly served or represented their monarch in certain spheres, such as the military, the judiciary, or the royal household, or who exercised royal power in a division or dependency of the realm.
