Paleography

Scope note

Study of ancient modes of writing, either inscribed or in manuscript form, including their identification in terms of origin or period, and the formation of individual characters. For the study and interpretation of ancient inscriptions specifically, whether of writing, pictures, or random scratchings, use "epigraphy."
