Use generally for competitions in games, sports, and combat in which many contestants compete for championship in a series of elimination contests. Use specifically for contests of mock combat engaged in by two groups of combatants, either mounted on horseback or on foot. They were traditional events among European aristocracy from Medieval times into the 17th century.
