Backing (bookbinding process)

Scope note

In bookbinding, the process applied to the back of a book which has been previously sewn and glued, whereby the back edges of the gatherings are splayed outwards from the center of the back, thus shaping a ridge or shoulder on each side; it is done at the same time as or just after rounding.
