Use for the bookbinding stitching method in which the thread passes through sheets of loose leaves or gatherings with damaged folds close to and over the binding edges, creating gatherings which are then sewn all along. Distinct from "oversewing," in which the stitches of one gathering loop up through the stitches of the previous one, to join them into a text block.
