Mordant

Scope note

Chemical substance that fixes a dye in or on a substance by combining with the dye to form an insoluble compound. In etching, refers to a corrosive substance, such as a nitric acid solution, used to corrode or bite the exposed areas of a metal plate. In gilding, refers to a viscous substance used to adhere the gold leaf to a surface.
