Nut (plant material)

Scope note

Generally, any dry fruit consisting of a firm, oil-rich seed surrounded by a hard or leathery shell derived either from the pericarp or the seed coat. Specifically, fruit in which the seed is enclosed by a hard, woody pericarp which does not split open when the seed is ripe.
