Keys (sound device components)

Scope note

Leverlike mechanical devices attached to or forming an integral part of a musical instrument or other sound device, functioning either as part of the direct sound-producing mechanism, as when admitting air to a pipe or causing a string to be struck or plucked, or, when on a confined aerophone, as devices governing those tone-holes that are out of reach or too large for the unaided finger.
