Calottes

Scope note

Denotes hemispherical, caplike domes; the term applies to small semidomes lacking a drum or lantern, small shallow domes used in the ceilings of rooms to increase headroom, small domes not pierced by oculi, and domelike plaster surfaces suspended within double-shell domes and often decorated.
