Lanterns (roof appendages)

Scope note

Windowed superstructures crowning a roof or dome, and serving to give light or air to the space below; in certain circumstances, such structures, whether they provide light or not; for small structures built on the ridges of roofs, common in American architecture, use "cupolas."
