Use for long, narrow, usually steep-sided cuts into the earth, as to receive pipes, wires, or footings; may also be used for defensive cuts, especially when the excavated earth is heaped in front as a barrier. For defensive cuts in which the earth is not used as added protection, use "fosses" or "moats."
