Kiswas

Scope note

Huge textile coverings for the Ka'ba at the Great Mosque in Mecca, used during the period of pilgrimage, with quotations from the Koran either inwoven or embroidered. Replaced each year, they are cut up after the ceremonies and their pieces distributed as relics.
