18th-century French term for a piece of furniture for the storage of stuffs (chiffons) and small articles of clothing. It is usually, but not necessarily, a small, low chest of drawers, narrower than the normal commode. For small cupboards with a top forming a sideboard, use "chiffoniers (sideboards)."
