Portuguese carpets

Scope note

A name of convenience for a type of rug characterized by maritime scenes in the corners, so called because the ships appear to be European manned by seamen in Portuguese or Dutch style clothing; the rugs are made with a cotton foundation with asymmetrical and some jufti knotting.
