Writing desks, especially of the small portable type, made since the 16th century and consisting of a nest of drawers enclosed in a box with a sloping front that is hinged along the bottom edge and may be let down to provide a writing platform. Term also applied to small, elegant desks patterned after the 18th-century French form.
