Sièges meublants

Scope note

French 18th-century chairs that were positioned against the wall. Their use was governed by strict protocol and sièges meublants were usually not sat on, but rather meant to be a part of the architectural decoration of a room. Distinct from "sièges courants" which stood in the center of a room and could be moved.
