Uglies

Scope note

Collapsible shading devices made of a series of cane half-hoops covered with silk and attached to the front of a woman's bonnet that provide protection from the sun; worn especially in the British Isles during the mid-19th century. In Scotland, may also refer to entire protective bonnets made of cotton stretched over half-hoops.
