Shoulder knots

Scope note

Use for ornamental knots of ribbon or lace, sometimes enriched with jewels, worn on the shoulder, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and North America. Use also for detachable flaps decorated with metallic cord worn on the shoulders of military uniforms, originally to keep a shoulder belt in place and later to indicate rank.
