Tilting sockets

Scope note

Armor pieces used in jousts in the 15th and 16th centuries, consisting of large metal plates, either shield-shaped or thigh-shaped, hung one on either side of the saddle or strapped to each of the combatant's thighs, to protect the thighs and knees.
