Horizontal masks

Scope note

African masks worn on an axis parallel to the ground. Usually composed of a tripartite structure consisting of a helmet form at the center, with horizontal projections to the front and back, horizontal masks often have abstract animal forms where the front projection is a mouth or snout and the back projections are horns.
