Use specifically for European percussive weapons having a heavy head, typically with a blunt or cusped face and at least one blade or spike at the back of the head or on top of the staff, various forms of which were in use from the 13th to the 17th century. Also used very generally for hammers used as fighting weapons in nearly all parts of the world since the Stone Age.
