Scope note

Throwing axes with a short handle and a long arched blade widening toward the cutting edge and ending in a prominent point at the top back corner and often at the bottom one as well. They had become the characteristic national weapon of the Franks by the 6th century and were used by other European peoples at least into the 9th century.
