Containers for the safe storage of articles; use especially for boxlike receptacles, generally of steel or iron construction and having one or more securing devices, that can be freestanding or built into a wall or vault and which are used to protect money and other valuables against fire or theft. Prefer "kitchen safes" for ventilated cabinets in which food is stored. Prefer "strongboxes" for lockable boxes which tend to be smaller and more portable.
