Percussion instruments in the form of a very shallow circular metal vessel, of varying size, usually with a turned-down rim, either nearly flat or with a central boss. Sounded by being struck with a beater midway between center and edge, or on the boss when present; they vibrate most strongly at the center and weakest at the rim.
