Clipper ships

Scope note

Use for fast ocean-going sailing ships generally characterized by sharply raked stern, a long and low hull with the draft deeper aft than forward, an inclined, overhanging counter stern, and a large spread of canvas; developed in the mid-19th century as cargo vessels, but their speed lent the vessels to other uses; typically having three masts and square rigs.
