Scope note

Medium to large seagoing sailing vessels of the late 16th and 17th centuries distinguished by high sterncastle, low forecastle, beakhead, fine ends, and full midships section; used as both merchant and fighting ships and formed the backbone of seagoing fleets for most European countries in the 17th century.
