Longboats

Scope note

Use for the largest ships' boats, particularly from the 18th century and earlier; straight-stemmmed, square-sterned with relatively high sides, and equipped with a sailing rig; used for transporting stores, water, men, supplies, and cargo. When referring to the largest ships' boats during the 19th and 20th centuries, use "launches."
