Scope note

Use for four-wheeled, covered carriages with either paneled or curtained sides, with or without perch, mounted on elliptic or platform springs, having a driver's seat included in the body proper and generally with a common roof projecting over the driver's area; could be drawn by one or two horses; popular in the United States in numerous body styles; introduced in the 1830s.
