Sculpture. Casket. Lid: Under six cusped arches with crocketted gables stand the figures of St Agnes, St Paul, St Peter, St John the Baptist, St Stephen, and St Catherine. Sides: Carved with scenes from the Martyrdom of St Catherine: her examination before Maxentius, the burning of the philosophers, the torture of the wheel, the beheading of the saint and her soul carried up to heaven. Mounts: Decorated alternately with panels of red, green and blue with pelican-like birds, salamanders and other fabulous beasts reserved in the metal. Lock-plate: Decorated with a hare in a field against a dark blue sky. Ivory, carved in relief, with contemporary champlevé enamelled silver mounts. Height 4.4 cm, width 9.6 cm, depth 6.4 cm, circa 1370-1400. Production Place: Paris, France. Gothic. Medieval.
