Description

Ivory, carved in relief, with contemporary champlevé enamelled silver mounts.
Lid: Under six cusped arches with crocketted gables stand the figures of St Agnes, St Paul, St Peter, St John the Baptist, St Stephen, and St Catherine.
Sides: Carved with scenes from the Martyrdom of St Catherine: her examination before Maxentius, the burning of the philosophers, the torture of the wheel, the beheading of the saint and her soul carried up to heaven.
Mounts: Decorated alternately with panels of red, green and blue with pelican-like birds, salamanders and other fabulous beasts reserved in the metal.
Lock-plate: Decorated with a hare in a field against a dark blue sky.

History note: Coll. of the Rev. Theodore Mayo (according to label on base). 1878: Exhibited on loan at South Kensington Museum. 1923: Exhibited at Burlington Fine Arts Club (cat. no. 137) - lent by Sir William Laurance. Sold Sotheby's, 16th November 1945, Catalogue of Fine Continental, English and Chinese Porcelain, French and English Furniture and Works of Art, p. 22, the Property of a Lady, lot 96, illustrated opposite p. 2; sold for £460 to the Fitzwilliam Museum
