Embroidery Sampler, by J.J. Sandeman

An image of Embroidery Sampler. J.J. Sandeman. Single weave canvas mounted on brown paper which has been turned and stitched onto the front of the sampler forming a 2.5cm/1" border. Embroidered with polychrome wools in cross, double cross, Montenegrin cross, rococco, rice, encroaching satin stitch with laid and couched stitches. Detached or "spot" motifs are placed on 3 sides of a rectangular "mat" of solid stitching, the mat comprises 15 blocks each of a different canvas work stitch, a "key" to the stitches provided by a separate piece of paper. 1953.
