sampler
Single weave canvas mounted on brown paper which has been turned and stitched onto the front of the sampler forming a 2.5cm/1" border.
Embroidered with polychrome wools in cross, double cross, Montenegrin cross, rococco, rice, encroaching satin stitch with laid and couched stitches.
Detached or "spot" motifs are placed on 3 sides of a rectangular "mat" of solid stitching, the mat comprises 15 blocks each of a different canvas work stitch, a "key" to the stitches provided by a separate piece of paper.
