Korean celadon-glazed ewer and cover

Ewer and cover. Unknown pottery, Korea, North Cholla province. Puan-gun, Yuch'on-ri kilns or Kangjin-gun, Sadang-ri kilns. The ewer has an eight-lobed body, curved spout, and a handle carved to simulate bamboo, with a loop in the form of a lotus bud on top. The footring is very shallow. The eight-petalled lid has a (replaced) lotus-bud knob accompanied by applied stem and leaves. A band of petal panels is incised at the mouth and one of lotus petals at the base, each lobe shows a delicate spray of lotus, and a large lotus leaf is incised on the spout. The cover is incised with a classic-scroll border. The glaze is of pale bluish-green jade colour, thickly applied and glossy, and on the ewer partly discoloured. The ewer shows large uneven spur-marks near the footring and in the centre of the base. Stoneware, thrown, with parts attached, indented, incised and celadon-glazed. Height, whole, 18.3 cm, diameter, rim, 4.5 cm, diameter, foot, 9.8 cm, circa 1150-1200. Koryo Dynasty. Related object: C.53-1984 basin.
