Italian slipware bowl decorated with a Latin Cross

Image attached to OC.8-1940

An image of Bowl. Unknown, probably The Veneto. Three spur marks inside. Shape 94. Inside is a Cross with strokes over the stem and arms, standing on a mount. Pale red earthenware covered with white slip except for the underside of the foot. Incised and painted in green and brownish-yellow under lead glaze which extends over the outside. Height, whole, 5.0 cm, diameter, foot, 5.6 cm, diameter, whole, 10.5 cm, circa 1470- 1520. Renaissance. Notes: Slipware bowls decorated with Latin Crosses and other Christian symbols were made for use in religious houses in Venice and elsewhere. This type of Cross symbolises the Passion of Christ, and the strokes or arrows over the stem and arms indicate the position of the nails driven into Christ's hands and feet. It is said to have been introduced by the Franciscan friar, St Bernardino (1380-1444).
