  • Text: peculiar manner, more the province of taste, than or rule. The / eye must arbitrate. Give the same materials to twenty artists, / & you will find twenty mordes of putting them together: but he, / who has the most taste, will put them together with the most har- / mony. - Some pains have been taken on this head, with the drawings annexed to these rules. Most of them have been studied in different ways whil in their black-lead state, to / bring their parts into harmonious composition. The XIIIth, and / XIVth drawings are examples. The contrast among the parts in / the former did not please. It was amended in the latter: and / might still be amended farther by raising the foreground on the / left, a little higher than the foreground on the right, wh. is some- / what removed from it in distance. A very little alteration / often makes a great difference in the harmony of the lines. I / shall only add on the subject of composition, that harsh lines / shd. always be avoided; such as are seen on the foreground / of the XIth sketch.
