The trees & other objects, wh. are touched / with a pen, may be touched with facility: but I fear there / will often be wanting that masterly touch, wh. marks the / character of an object. / Of interesting the eye(underlined), & imagination(underlined). / But now, as the chief end of landscape is to please, all these rules may be well observed _ the character(underlined) of the lands- / cape may be just _ the contrasts in disposing(underlined), the several parts / may be pleasing _ the light, & shade(underlined) judicious, and the execution good, yet still the lands - / cape may not be pleasing. In a drama something more / is required to give it success, than the bare observance of / the unities. It ought always therefore to be in the painter's / view
