  • Text: such figures, as coalesse in idea with the scenes in wh. we / place them. _ But whatever figures are introduced, let them / be introduced without any affectation, or flutter to catch the / eye, & take it from the landscape. + If they are so conspicuous, as to / obtrude upon the eye, they are introduced as improperly, as / landscape(underlined) would be in a history-piece(underlined), when it interferes / with the figures. I speak not however of such landscape, as / Berghem's, in wh. figures make the principal a(*) [part _ Cattle are / always in a state of nature, & are welcome into our wildest land - / scapes at all times _ only let them be masterly tourhced & let them / not obtrude upon the eye; & let not the ground be overstocked / in our wildest scenes [where] Stags, & forest-deer are particularly] useful.
