Description

Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, Holbein, and satin stitches. The upper section of 7.3/4' is filled with detached motifs including birds, a butterfly, a fish, a fly, a frog, a key, a lion, a stag, a unicorn, a man with a staff. The date, 1648, and the initials 'AS' are placed centrally in the lower part of the section. Below this there are sixteen horizontal bands, 13 of repeat border patterns, 3 containing an upper and lower case alphabet.
