Linen pictorial band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, Montenegrin cross, double running, satin, split, trellis and detached buttonhole stitch. Linen thread is worked in the hem and double running, counted satin and eye stitch with needle weaving, and drawn and cutwork with needle lace filling stitches make up the top bands of the sampler. Three edges are hemmed and there is a selvedge at the top.The pattern consists of three conventional floral arcaded bands at the bottom; immediately above them is the large-scale arcaded pattern with birds, probably woodpeckers. Above another two bands, one wide the other narrow, with stylized arcaded flowers. Above these two bans is the widest band of the sampler with two figures dressed in the fashion of the 1650s, standing either side of an apple tree. The inscription above includes an alphabet, the name 'ANNe LaWLe' with the remnants of stitching and faded ink reading " february". The less decipherable date is either 1655 or 1665.
