Band sampler, linen, worked in polychrome silks in double running, cross, Montenegrin cross and eyelet stitch, with six alphabets, a set of numerals, and various inscriptions.
Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in double running, cross, Montenegrin cross and eyelet stitch. White linen thread is worked in counted satin and double running stitch. There is a selvedge at the bottom and the other edges are hemmed. The sampler is arranged into twelve horizontal sections divided by narrow repeating geometric border patterns. There are five coloured alphabets, one of whitework, a set of numerals 1-14 and in the centre of the ninth section a panel with two lions flanking a crowned 'WR'. The inscripton reads' RATher DePeNd UPON YOVr FIng/ers eNds TheN FIX YOUr EXPeCT/ATION ON YOUr FrIeNds E SIMPSON', 'My WIshes Are bUT FUe AIL EAS/Ie TOO FULfIL I MAKe The LIMITS/ of My POWer The BOUNds UNTO/MY WILL ELIZAbeTh SIMPSON', ' ChILdreN Obey Your PAreNTS','FeAr GOd HONour The KINg', ' I FeeL NO CAre of COIN WelL doING/IS My WeATh My MINd TO Me AN/eMPIre IS WhiLe GrAce AfordeTh/ HeALTh.
