Description

Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and eyelet hole stitch. The sampler comprises 29 horizontal bands. The top six contain alphabets, bands 7-11, 17-25 and 27-29 inscriptions, band 13 has trees bushes and coronets worked, 14 and 15 the name and date 'Elizabeth Ellis 1734', band 10 contains initials and band 20 has flowering plants, birds and coronets worked. The inscription reads 'Oh Lord now I my chil/dish years direct me in/thy truth and as the ap/ple of thine eye preser/ve me in my youth/ Elizabeth Ellis her/samplar MD CCXXX, 'Wit and Proportion/in youth seemeth bright/ but vertue only is the/Lords delight 1734 &c/ the keeping of the sab/bath day it is a vertue/ pure the greatest bles/sings from The Lord for/us it will procure/ EE aged 9 years god grant that I may/Live with thee eternally'.
