Description

Border sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and satin stitch featuring a strawberry border, two alphabets, numerals and inscription and a panel containing the name of the maker.

Woollen border sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and satin stitch. There is a double blue line selvedge at the top and bottom and the sides are hemmed with yellow silk. The whole sampler is tacked onto a supporting cotton backing. A repeating strawberry border patterns goes all around the sampler. At the top there are two alphabets, a set of numerals and twelve sets of paired initials, a repeating floral border pattern, an inscription and a wider repeating floral border pattern. The inscription reads' I'LL BE SINCERE UPRIGHT AND TR/UE AT HOME AT SCHOOL AND EL/SE WHERE TO AF.MF.EV.MM.IB'. The main body of the sampler contains a panel supported by two angels and inscribed 'HETTY GRIGG/HAVANT/1761' with a heart and two crowns. At the bottom is a house on a lawn flanked by trees, flowerpots and birds. The remaining space contains a balanced arrangement of detached trees, flower baskets, birds, butterflies, hearts and lozenges, a centrally placed flower spray and the initials 'H G'.
