Description

Bordered sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. The sampler is divided into four sections and surrounded by a repeating strawberry border; it features detached motifs, inscriptions and the Temptation of Adam and Eve.

Woollen bordered sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. There is a double blue line selvedge on both sides; the top and bottom are hemmed and the entire sampler is mounted on a supporting cotton backing. A strawberry repeating border pattern surrounds the sampler. The main body is arranged in four horizontal sections. The first contains detached flowerpots, fruit baskets and crowns arranged symmetrically on either side of a bird on a tree. The second section contains a panel with a Greek key border flanked by trees containing the verse ' Fragrant the Rose is but it Fade in Time/ The Violet sweet but quickly past the Prime/ White Lilies hang their Head and soon decay/ And Whiter Snow in Minutes melts away/ Such and so Withring are our early (J)oys/Which Time or Sickness (S)peedily destroys'. The third section depicts the Temptation of Adam and Eve, an angel and a fig tree. The final section depicts a balanced arrangement of detached trees, stags, flowerpots, sprays, squirrels and butterflies. Beneath these the inscription 'Harriot Plastin Her Work Aged 10 years 1814' is worked.
