Description

Bordered sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, marking cross, double running, satin, stem, and rococo stitch. A repeating floral border surrounds the main body of the sampler. The sampler contains repeating border patterns, detached motifs, lettering and three inscriptions.

Woollen bordered sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, marking cross, double running, satin, stem, and rococo stitch. There is a double blue line selvedge at the sides and top and bottom are hemmed. A repeating floral border surrounds the main body of the sampler. At the top there are two bands of repeating floral border patterns; a thirds band of ornate lettering A-N. Centred below these is a panel with a verse and the inscription ' AWaKE My SOUL and with the Sun/Thy daiLY STage of duTY run/ Shake of dull SLOth and EarLY rise/To Pay the morning Sacrifice./Isabel REdiE aGEd 12 1816 I C HillE'd'. To the left is an octagon incribed around the edge 'arms OF Scotland' and containing a thistle. To the right a similar octagon inscribed 'LinLithGOWS arms' containing a bird either side of a stylized tree with a chained hound. The rest of the ground is filled with pairs of initials and detached motifs, crowns, dogs, flowering plant, birds and a leopard. At the centre bottom is a house set behind a garden wall.
